Bombs found in brick kiln

Tamluk, Dec. 23: A CRPF raid on a Khejuri brick kiln today threw up 76 live bombs.

CRPF assistant commandant A.K. Upadhyay said the bombs had been defused.

Sniffer dog Bhakhan accompanied a bomb disposal squad in combing the spot, near Tekhali bridge, but did not find any more explosives.

Upadhyay said the local police have been asked to carry out a probe. East Midnapore superintendent of police S.S. Panda said an investigation team has been formed.

“We have interrogated a few people, including the owner of Satyanarayan brick kiln, who lives nearby,” said an officer of Khejuri police station.

On March 17, 10 CPM activists had been arrested from another brick kiln, about 200 metres away from the kiln that was raided today. They were held on charges of stocking arms and bombs. All the activists were later released on bail.

The CRPF began searching Satyanarayan brick kiln after a tip-off that stacks of arms and explosives had been hidden there.

On Friday, the force had raided an abandoned pump-house located next to a CPM office in the party’s stronghold, Kunjapur, but nothing was found.

The Bhoomi Uchchhed Pratirodh Committee alleged that more weapons had been hidden by CPM cadres. “If searches are conducted thoroughly, many hidden stockpiles of arms and explosives that the CPM cadres have been using since the first week of November can be found,” Abu Taher, a convener of the committee, said.
