Militant hideout hunt

Calcutta, Dec. 22: At least 30 members of the Manipuri militant outfit, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak), are active on the city’s southern fringes, intelligence sources said today.

“We have identified 30 persons whose activities are suspicious,” said an official. “Many of them are under the guise of students and software professionals or are engaged in other professions.”

Seven suspected militants — four men and three women — were arrested from Jadavpur on Thursday.

They were taken to Garia, Tollygunge, Regent Park and Behala over the past two days. “They used to operate in these areas. We are trying to find out their other hideouts,” said South 24-Parganas superintendent of police Praveen Kumar.

Police and military intelligence personnel picked up the seven from an apartment in Bapuji Nagar during a joint raid. The men have been remanded in police custody for nine days. The women will be in jail custody for a fortnight.

A Manipur special branch team questioned them today. It is likely to seek transit remand for the group.

An officer said Maisnam German Singh, 27, who had rented the apartment, was “a sergeant in Prepak”.
