Vengsarkar’s dig at Bengal

Calcutta: Chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar took a dig at Bengal on Wednesday, saying they still have miles to go before ruling the domestic circuit like Mumbai.

Bengal finished Ranji Trophy runners-up in the past two seasons, but are fighting for survival this season. “Bengal can’t hope to be at the top like Mumbai all the time,” Vengsarkar, who watched the Bengal-Uttar Pradesh match at the Eden, said on Wednesday.

Manoj Tiwary and Ranadeb Bose had disappointed all but the chief selector refused any comment. “I don’t want to say anything on individual performances. You’ve seen how they performed,” Vengsarkar said. The former India captain, however, was all praise for Uttar Pradesh’s performance.

“Uttar Pradesh has been impressive. These youngsters did well,” he said.
