Contempt case

Calcutta: The high court to- day asked small-scale industries minister Narayan Biswas why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for flouting the order to pay “substantial allowances” to an officer who was dismissed for allegedly defalcating Rs 1,300.

Handicrafts Development Corporation secretary K.L. Surana had alleged that he paid the price for pointing out then minister Bansagopal Chowdhury’s “unlawful activities”.

The state administrative tribunal had asked the gov- ernment to treat Surana as a suspended employee and pay substantial allowances (75 per cent of the salary).
