Teen run over during gully cricket

A game of gully cricket claimed a teenager’s life as Kanhaiya Kumar was crushed under the wheels of a speeding minibus on KK Tagore Street on Tuesday morning.

The 13-year-old resident of Strand Road, who was trying to retrieve the ball they were playing with, died on the spot.

Police said Kanhaiya had left home around 11am to play cricket on the pavement of KK Tagore Street.

“He stepped off the pavement to fetch the ball after it was hit by one his friends, oblivious to the minibus on the Belghoria-Howrah route,” said an officer of the traffic police department.

“The driver slammed the brakes, but the boy was crushed by the wheels of the vehicle. He was taken to Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared brought dead,” said an officer.

Fearing mob fury, the driver and the conductor fled. The bus was impounded.

Close shave: Two persons had a narrow escape in other mishaps on Tuesday. Tapas Kumar Bhattacharya, 70, a Sinthee resident, was knocked down by a minibus on route 160 in front of Lalbazar police headquarters in the afternoon.

Bhattacharya, who was crossing the road, suffered fractures in both legs. The driver and the conductor fled despite heavy police presence in the area.

Nadim Khan, 25, was injured when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a car on Majherhat Bridge. He is under medical observation.
