Varsity

Calcutta, Dec. 17: The Assembly today passed the Aliah Uni- versity Bill to set up a university in central Calcutta. It will offer professional and tech-nical courses.

Singur death

Singur: Shankar Patra, 50, a daily labourer, was found hanging from the ceiling of his house in Khaserbheri, 100m from the Tata Motors plant site, on Monday. Police said he had no land and the death was not related to the project. Mamata Banerjee is coming here on Tuesday.

Couple assault

Calcutta: Bhaskar Deb and his wife Shyamali Bandopadhyay, who organise the women’s film festival in Salt Lake, were attacked in Dum Dum on Monday night. Bhaskar, who was hit in the head, has been hospitalised. Mamata Banerjee had attended the festival on Monday.
