Suicide by unwilling bride-to-be

Priya Shaw, 16, committed suicide at her Khagen Chatterjee Road home, in Cossipore, unhappy with the match her parents had fixed for her in Patna.

Priya’s sister Ekta found her hanging from the ceiling, a dupatta tied around her neck, early on Friday. The sisters and their brother were in the house the previous night. Their parents were in a relative’s place in Sodepur.

Ekta became suspicious when she did not find Priya in the bedroom on Friday morning. She rushed to the other room and saw her hanging from the ceiling. Neighbours arrived on hearing Ekta’s cries and informed the parents, before bringing down the body.

“It seems the girl killed herself before dawn. We have learnt that she was not happy with the match her parents had fixed for her,” said an officer of Cossipore police station.
