Academic session meet flops

The proposed January-December academic session for schools is not likely to be implemented from next year.

Education department officials who were asked to examine the proposal met on Friday but failed to reach a consensus. “The officials want to hold a more detailed discussion on the matter before taking a decision,” said Dibyen Mukherjee, the director of the school education department.

Sources, however, said the government has deferred a decision on the issue as the CPM is yet to ratify the proposal of a January-December academic session.

State school education minister Partha De had announced last year that the government wanted to revert to the pre-1988 academic session from January to December for schools. The current academic session now starts in May.
