Two killed in twin mishaps

Two persons were killed in road mishaps on Monday. Mita Bose, 48, a resident of Rajdanga Main Road, was hit by a minibus on the Kasba-Howrah route around 9.35am at the Sundari Mohan Avenue-Gorachand Road crossing. Police took her to National Medical College and Hospital, where she was declared dead. The driver fled with his vehicle. arayan Mandal, 42, a resident of Guptipara, in Hooghly, was hit by a state bus at the Dunlop crossing around 5.30pm. He was taken to a Barrackpore hospital, where he was declared dead. The driver was arrested and the bus impounded. The bodies were sent for post-mortem.

Dummy arrest

Two dummy candidates were arrested in the city on Monday for allegedly appearing in place of their relatives in a test to recruit Group D employees for Eastern Railway. Makardas Sharma, a resident of Khardah, was arrested on the charge of impersonating his maternal uncle Abhishek Sharma. The invigilator at Mahajati Nagar, in Agarpara, sensed everything was not right after scanning Sharma’s admit card and other documents. Rajanikanta Kumar, a resident of Nalanda in Bihar, tried to appear in the exam for his brother-in-law Prem Kumar Singh at Ashoknagar Vidyapith School in Jadavpur.

Cop dies

Gulap Mishra, 59, a constable of Calcutta police, died after a cardiac arrest while eating breakfast on Monday morning. Police said Mishra fell unconscious during breakfast at the Intelligence Branch canteen on Lord Sinha Road. He was taken to Calcutta Police Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Course unveil

Health minister Surjya Kanta Mishra on Monday inaugurated a one-year post-M.Sc. diploma course in medical physics. The course has been started by Jadavpur University, along with AMRI Hospitals, Dhakuria. Students will learn treatment techniques like Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, radiation dose measurement and radiation safety.

Road injury

Two persons were injured in road incidents in Calcutta on Monday. An unidentified vehicle knocked down Haradhan Mandal, 36, a resident of Bagnan, around 8.50am at the crossing of MG Road and NS Road. Jyotirmoy Das, 86, a resident of Dum Dum Park, was hit by an autorickshaw around 6pm in the College Street area. Both were admitted to Medical College and Hospital, where their condition was stated to be critical.

Flights delayed

Two Air Deccan flights from Calcutta were delayed by several hours. A Calcutta-Jamshedpur flight took off at 9.10am, instead of its scheduled departure time of 6.20am, because of operational problems, airport officials said. The same flight leaves for Silchar after arriving in Calcutta. As a result, the Silchar flight took off at 11.30am, instead of 9.30am.

College agitation

About 70 students of a private dental college in north Calcutta on Monday gheraoed the principal, demanding payment of stipends. They said their stipends had not been paid for three months and the college authorities had refused to discuss the matter with them.
