Anjan Dutt with Bong Connection main man Shayan Munshi
|
Bengalis bewilder him. So Anjan Dutt is back with more Bongs in his next movie. If The Bong Connection was tongue-in-cheek, the tentatively-titled Lets Go will delve deep into the different types of Bengalis living all across the globe.
Lets Go is a travelogue layered with fun, adventure and revelations from 14 characters played by Parambrata Chatterjee, Rudranil Ghosh, Saswata Chatterjee, Aparajita Ghosh Das, Koneenica Banerjee, Bidipta Chakraborty, Ritwick Chakraborty, Arindam Sil, film-maker Kaushik Ganguly and Biplab Chatterjee among others.
The film is basically a comedy. The 14 characters are travelling together and through each of them I want to explore the types of Bengalis they are. There is the elderly Bengali, the middle-class Bengali, the NRI Bong, the GenX Bengali and the yuppie Bengali. Bengalis enjoy travelling together and I want to capture that fun. Theres picnic, adda and everything else that Bengalis love to do. The film has a twist in the end, says Dutt, done with the post-production of the Hindi film BBD.
The success of Bong Connection made me re-evaluate what I wanted to do next. I wanted to do a modern Bengali film spiked with humour. I miss humour in contemporary Bengali cinema.
For the huge ensemble cast, Dutt has picked a bunch of actors from TV. The story is the most important aspect and the film doesnt need star value. Also because I am comfortable working with TV actors, admits Dutt, who will shoot this film-on-the-go in Calcutta, New Jalpaiguri, Gorumara, Kalimpong and Darjeeling. Lets Go doesnt have a straight narrative; there are some flashback scenes to be shot in Calcutta.
Produced by Optima Films, Lets Go has six songs. Dutts son Neel, who has composed the music, is currently busy rearranging a classic Bengali track. I wont reveal which song, but its a popular Uttam-Suchitra number. There will also be a Rabindrasangeet, says Neel. The Lets Go team hits the road in end-November.
