Calcutta, Nov. 9: Over 500 people were arrested across the city on Diwali night for bursting banned crackers.
If central Calcutta was noisy, Ballygunge Circular Road was no better.
Rooftop revellers and those in silence zones were a major problem, said Biswajit Mukherjee, a senior law officer of the environment department and member-secretary of the noise monitoring committee who was in a team that went around the city.
The major offenders were from central Calcutta, said police commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakrabarti. Two arrests were made from highrises in Ballygunge.
A man was caught inside NRS Medical College and Hospital and another outside Sambhunath Pandit Hospital
Environment activist Subhas Dutta said tonight was ear-shattering.
