Junk or jewel, just do it

Rituparna Sengupta

What I love to wear: I am fond of ethnic and junk jewellery. I prefer gold jewellery mixed with copper. I am also fond of silver danglers, jhumkas and bangles. I have a good collection of kundan necklaces. I love wearing toe rings with salwar kameez. With sari, I wear junk or gold.

Where I shop: I was recently in Santiniketan to shoot for the film Phera and I picked up some dokra earrings and neckpieces. I bought a huge collection of danglers and silver rings from Singapore. I pick up jewellery wherever I go.

My prized piece: The diamond engagement ring from my husband Sanjoy.

Aparna Sen

What I love to wear: A lot of old silver jewellery and some beaded items. I also love wearing crystal pieces. I have a necklace with gold beads and a black tassel that I had bought in Chennai; it’s very light and pretty and is my favourite. I have a collection of various types of bangles. And I love my thin diamond bangle in gold. I usually don’t like to change my diamond earrings, which I often wear with saris as well as jeans.

Where I shop: I am not going to reveal the places where I get my pieces from! I pick up whatever catches my eye. I buy jewellery whenever I am travelling.

My prized piece: A typical Gujarati bangle in black gold. Odissi dancer Sonal Mansingh had gifted it to me.

Sudipta Chakraborty

What I love to wear: I don’t have a fascination for gold jewellery or very heavy ornaments. Instead I love to wear jewellery with semi-precious stones. I mix and match them with different kind of clothes. I have a fetish for stone-studded bangles. I love to sport these with traditional outfits. With jeans, I wear beaded jewellery.

Where I shop: I pick up stone-encrusted ornaments from Chique at Forum. If I buy gold at all, I go to Tanishq or The Gold Factory.

My prized piece: Earrings given by my mother. It’s a paisley design with maroon meenakari. It’s very pretty.

JEET

What I love to wear: Just about anything, from rings and chains to wristlets. But the trinkets have to be trendy. I have quite a collection of beaded accessories. I am not too fond of gold, though I wear a white gold chain most of the time and a wristlet which is imitation gold. I did sport a lot of beaded bangles in Pitribhumi. I also like to wear oxidised jewellery. Currently I am wearing rubber bangles in different colours and they look quite cool. I’ve got junk jewellery from Chamba Lama in New Market as gifts.

Where I shop: I pick up jewellery from everywhere in Calcutta. I bought imitation jewellery during my trips to Singapore and Bangkok. Wherever I am, I always make it a point to pick up something.

My prized piece: The white gold chain. I just love it!

Chandreyee Ghosh

What I love to wear: Junk jewellery. I love beaded pieces. Hoop earrings are my favourite, and also necklaces. But I don’t wear bangles much. And I don’t wear gold at all.

Where I shop: Santiniketan is my favourite place from where I buy a lot of rudraksh and dokra jewellery. I also place orders and get necklaces made of my choice.

My prized piece: Nothing in particular, but I am a jewellery freak.

Swastika Mukherjee

What I love to wear: Jewellery studded with semi-precious stones. I also love Tibetan pieces and jewellery made from shells. If I am attending a formal party, I wear antique gold ornaments. The only piece of jewellery that I always wear is a diamond ring. It has an Om imprinted on it. I am also fond of nose studs. I usually wear a diamond one. I have around 15 nose studs and I have loads of glass bangles. My father sometimes teases me saying that I have enough bangles to put up a stall in a mela.

Where I shop: I pick up the Tibetan pieces from Chamba Lama. I have often shopped for my shell jewellery from beaches. I bought a few silver pieces from Darjeeling a few years back. I also got some stone-crusted items from Thailand.

My prized piece: A meenakari hairpin my grandma had gifted me for my wedding. I love all the gold and pearl jewellery that my mother and my grandmother gave me for my marriage. They are all very heavy pieces with jadau work.
