Suicide arrests
Moneylenders Nantu Roy and Nanigopal Chakraborty have been arrested on the basis of an FIR lodged in connection with the suicide of 20-year-old college student Rajib Nath, police said on Thursday. Rajib committed suicide at his Thakurpukur home on Saturday, following insults by local goons, from whom his father Panchu had taken loans at high interest rates.
Centenary
The week-long centenary celebrations of Goethals Memorial School, in Kurseong, start on November 1. The centenary day will be celebrated on November 3, the Calcutta chapter of the school’s alumni association announced on Thursday.
Hangs himself
Depression drove Arindam Mandal, 30, to hang himself at his Hem Banerjee Lane home in Howrah on Thursday. Mandal had a small factory that made lids of aquariums.
Fatal mishap
Motorcyclist Sugata Bhowmick, 40, a resident of Diamond Park, in Thakurpukur, died after being run over by a private bus on Thursday morning. The bus driver fled, but police impounded his vehicle and the motorcycle.
