Student leader out on bail, bandh off

Dhubri, Oct. 30: The president of the All Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union, Biswajit Roy, was released on bail from Dhubri police station today.

General secretary of the union Pradip Roy said it had given the state government 24 hours to release Biswajit.

“We have called off the indefinite Assam bandh as the government has conceded to our demand in releasing Biswajit. But other agitation programmes, including the rail blockade on November 15 and 16, remain unchanged,” the general secretary said.

Dhubri police picked up Biswajit around 10pm on Sunday from the BRPL township in Dhaligaon.

Biswajit was brought to Dhubri police station yesterday. Dhubri superintendent of police Partho Sarathi Mahanta, deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) Subhasish Barua and intelligence officials interrogated Biswajit till 1pm today.

Most of the charges levelled against Biswajit deal with criminal offences, including arson, rioting and damaging public property.

Meanwhile, the duo accused of setting fire to an ASTC bus at Nandipara Tiniali under Golokganj police station on Friday night — Paramesh Roy alias Naso and Kartik Roy — office-bearers of the faction headed by Biswajit, have been remanded to five days in police custody.
