‘Salman urged me to judge Nach Baliye’

David Dhawan is the master of comedy on the big screen. But these days good ol’ DD is all over the small screen, watching every move made on STAR One’s Nach Baliye 3. After Farhan Akhtar and Kunal Kohli, David is the third director to put on the judge’s cap on the popular dance show. t2 caught up with the funnyman and asked him about his whole new experience.

How has it been for you on Nach Baliye'

Bahut, bahut achha hai. I am really enjoying it. It is quite a change, you know. Itne films direct kiye hain... yeh alag sa experience hai. Yeh alag sa medium hai. Pehli baar acting bhi karni pari. Ab pata chala ki main itna dant-ta tha logon ko... acting toh bahut difficult cheez hai yaar... mujhe nahin karna chahiye aise... (laughs).

Why did you agree to be on the show in the first place'

When STAR One approached me, I was not very keen on doing it. Mujhe achha lagaa sunne mein... But I wasn’t very interested. Phir Salman se baat ki maine... He pressurised me. He said: “David, it’s a damn good thing yaar... Do it, do it. It will be good for you.” Then I spoke to my family. My family, my kids... they also felt very nice. Aise hi doston yaaron ki maje maje mein maine kar li...

Dancing has been an integral part of your comedies. What do you feel about the quality of dancing on Nach Baliye'

When I started judging the show, the quality of the dancing was a bit dheela... kuch zaroor bahut achhe thhe... It was a mix. But then some of the bad ones improved with every week. I was very rude to them. I told them I haven’t come here to see this kind of pathetic display. There’s so much competition. Gradually, they got better. Now with the best couples left, it will only get better.

How is your rapport with your co-judges Ishaa Koppikar and Vaibhavi Merchant'

Very good. Ishaa has done a film with me. Vaibhavi has worked on a film of mine. So the relationship was there. They look up to me as a senior, as an elder. We are all together. We are like a family.

One of your constant collaborators Shakti Kapoor was one of the contestants...

Yes. He is out now. It was nice to see him. At this age also, he was trying hard to do something.

Which are your favourite dancing couples on the show'

It’s difficult to say but three of the couples are very good. Rakhi and Abhishek are good. Then there’s Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda. Krishna and Kashmira are also good. One more pair should surprise. Woh kaun hai mujhe maloom nahin. The wild card round is still left. So maybe one of the six ousted couples will come back and surprise us.

You have been with the industry for all these years. Is dance as a form changing in films and on television'

Dance will never change. Of the new forms I like salsa and Latino. Purana style, the 90s style, abhi akarta hai... utna mazaa nahin aata... Change is always welcome but then again one old dance pops up and you again like it. We are going towards the West now but then Indian aata hai aur phaadke rakh deta hai. There has to be a balance.

What’s happening on the film front'

I am still working on the scripts. I haven’t decided which one to start next. Tom & Jerry I will start next June with Salman and Govinda.
