Like father, like son
Anjan and Neel Dutt perform at Oh!Calcutta at the album launch. Picture by Bishwarup Dutta

The wait is finally over. Anjan Dutt is back with his new album, Aami Aar Godot, following a seven-year sabbatical.

On Wednesday evening, Oh! Calcutta transformed into a mini concert hall as it played host to the much-awaited launch of Dutt’s latest work. The Saregama CD was unveiled by film-maker Mrinal Sen, celebrated by Dutt in a song titled Cinema.

It was a special moment for singer-songwriter Dutt, with son Neel for company this time. The two have been jamming since 1993, but this is the first time they have recorded a set of originals.

A number of familiar faces like director Kaushik Ganguly, actor Arindam Sil and members of the Bangla band Chandrabindoo trooped in to cheer for Anjan and Neel, who called upon fellow musicians Amyt Dutta, Gyan Singh, Rajkumar and Sourav Chatterjee to join up in a live performance. The songs followed their own leisurely pace; reflecting on life, love and people, offering the audience a taste of Anjan’s signature story-telling style, drenched in acoustic guitar strains.

Ami Aar Godot revisits the rock’n’roll charm of Ranjana, while Neel’s compositions like Jaanla and Aamar guitar ekta bondhu tread a mellower path. For Anjan loyalists, the album is a must-buy.
