A 22-year-old home guard has slapped attempt-to-rape charges on sub-inspector Ratan Ganguly and driver Bhola Hazra of Jadavpur police station.

The duo were arrested on Thursday morning and produced at the South 24 Parganas district magistrate’s court. Both have been remanded in judicial custody for 12 days.

According to an FIR lodged by the home guard on Wednesday night, the two barged into the first-floor women’s restroom in the police station late on September 22 and tried to rape her. All other personnel of the police station were away on duty at the time.

She went on a month’s leave after the incident. After resuming service on Wednesday, she told her superiors about the incident, who passed on the information to South 24-Parganas superintendent of police Praveen Kumar.

Kumar went to Jadavpur police station on Wednesday night and spoke separately to the victim and the accused duo. After the “interrogation”, he advised the home guard to lodge an FIR. Based on the FIR, the duo were arrested on Thursday morning.

Kumar confirmed the names and designations of the arrested to Metro.

According to sources, the victim told Kumar that late on September 22, Ganguly and Hazra started banging on the door of the restroom, in which she was alone. When she resisted their advances, Ganguly tried to disrobe her while the driver grappled with her. They fled after a while, fearing that her cries may attract attention.

The police have started an inquiry. The team will also look into an allegation that some of the victim’s superiors had tried to hush up the case when she had narrated the incident to them.
