Deserted baby with mother

The three-month-old girl who was found abandoned in a puja pandal in Jadavpur on Sunday has been handed over to her mother Sumita Saha. The woman had come to Jadavpur police station on Tuesday and claimed the baby. he baby was handed over to her after an inquiry, in the presence of police, the local councillor and her family members. H.K.Chanda, the superintendent of MR Bangur Hospital, where the police admitted the baby, said the authorities had also checked the birth certificate of the girl. Sumita, a resident of Bapujinagar, in Jadavpur, has another daughter.

Rape arrest

Timir Basu, a member of the Madhyamgram I local committee of the CPM, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly raping his step-daughter. The girl, a student of Class X, had approached an NGO who took her to Barasat police station. Supratim Sarkar, the superintendent of police (North 24-Parganas), said a rape case has been registered against Basu on the basis of a complaint of the girl, who has been sent for a medical test.

Clash injury

Baidya Saha, 25, was injured in a clash in Manikpur, Sonarpur, on the southern fringes of the city, on Tuesday night. Police said Saha was admitted to MR Bangur Hospital in a critical condition. A police picket has been posted in the area.

Found dead

An unconscious man, aged around 70, was found lying on Howrah bridge on Wednesday. A team from North Port police station took him to Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead. The body has been sent post-mortem.

Body in river

The bloated corpse of a man, aged around 35, was found near Baje Kadamtala ghat on Wednesday.

Man held

Mohammad Shamim was arrested in Jorasanko on Wednesday after he was found loitering aimlessly. A firearm was found in his possession. Police said Shamim had planned to snatch valuables from pedestrians.
