1 The votes just poured in, screaming one name. CHAK
DE! INDIA wins the t2 Screen Award for the Best Film of the year by a colossal 79.6 per cent votes. Released in the third quarter of the year, the Yash Raj Films production started on a low-key note but soon the word spread that this was something special. Then before you could say SRK, chak de! had become a national anthem. The Shimit Amin film about a disgraced hockey star out to salvage lost pride by coaching a team of talented but temperamental girls to the World Cup was definitely the must-watch movie of the year. So what if Shah Rukh didnt have a heroine and could only strike his arms-stretched-wide pose to congratulate his wards!

2 At
the beginning of the year if you would have told Mani
Ratnam that his third Hindi film would be the second
best Bollywood movie of the year, he sure would have
been a happy man. Going for the classic biopic format,
Mani Sir tasted success in Mumbai for the first time
with GURU. Matching substance with his signature style,
he gave Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai a much-needed
hit (and the chance to know each other better before
tying the knot). Given the Chak De! sweep, Guru managed
13 per cent votes.

3 If
Rays Mahanagar had to be updated and set in
Mumbai, LIFE... IN A METRO would not have made the
maestro
too unhappy, one feels. A relentless journey of myriad
characters struggling to cope with life, Metro wins
the bronze in the Best Film list with a 5 per cent
vote count. Marked by brilliant performances, the
UTV production stood out thanks to director Anurag
Basus
intimate storytelling, forcing us to seek and find
a bit of ourselves in each of the nine characters.
Whats next? A sequel!
4 Not
many turned up to watch this poignant period drama
from Feroz Abbas Khan but those who did will remember
it for a long, long time. GANDHI
MY FATHER may not
have stormed the box office collections but it stood
for good cinema, a rarity in Bollywood. The vote count
may have been just around 3 per cent but it shouldnt
stop Khan and producer Anil Kapoor from dreaming big
again.
5 It
may have been a big hit at the theatres but when it
came to the Best Film of the year category, not many
went for NAMASTEY LONDON. In fact, just one of you
voted for the Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif film. Maybe
rom coms arent taken that seriously when it
comes to honours and awards. But the film did bring
a smile to many a face this year, so we thought it
deserved a place on the list.
1 RAM
GOPAL VARMA KI AAG is the clear winner (or should we say loser!) in this final category of the t2 Screen Awards 07. The much-hyped remake of Sholay was named Worst Film of the year by 61 per cent of respondents. And with good reason. The unfortunate few who caught the film could not curse it enough. Nothing worked for RGV in this Factory flop show — from the sleazy Basanti to the disastrous Gabbar. The one positive: no one dare remake Sholay again!

2 Om
Puri is one of our best and has even done well in
the West. Anupam Kher is top rung and has just worked
with Oscar-winning director Ang Lee. Mahabanoo Mody-Kotwal
is a respected theatre actor in Mumbai. So what were
they doing in BUDDHA MAR GAYA? If the idea — whoever
beds Rakhi Sawant dies — wasnt bad enough,
the implementation was as crass as can be. And to
think that Rahul Rawail had made Dacait and Betaab
years before unleashing this bed-and-bedlam tale
on anyone who dared walk into the theatres. Some
of you did, and cast 17 per cent votes to label
it Worst Film.

3 The
film which made a lot of noise prior to its release
went NISHABD soon after it hit the halls. And yes,
it was Ram Gopal Varma again who got it horribly wrong.
With little big girl Jiah Khan flashing thunder thighs
and bad ol Bachchan ogling and giggling, the
film never really went anywhere. What was the because,
Ramu, ask 12 per cent of our voters in the Worst Film
category. (Our sources say Ram Gopal Varma thanks t2
for not including a Worst Director category!) |
