5 killed in jeep crash

Calcutta, Oct. 21: Five persons were killed today when their Bolero fell into a roadside ditch after hitting a tree.

The five, all in their early thirties, were pandal-hopping on Diamond Harbour Road when the speeding Maheshtala-bound Bolero tried to swerve away from two motorcycles coming from the opposite direction and ran into a tree.

Body found

Krishnagar: Residents of Nadia’s Palpara village stumbled on the bullet-ridden body of the manager of a cinema on Saturday. Bimal Pal, 30, was lying dead with gunshot injuries in his head on the bank of a pond, 300 yards from his home. Police said Pal had left home on Friday night to visit Puja pandals and had not returned.

Ration loot

Behrampore: Villagers in Sialmara, 210km from Calcutta, looted four quintals of rice and two barrels of kerosene from the shop of ration dealer Mahammed Mainuddin on Saturday. Police said the villagers were angry with Mainuddin for allegedly selling six litres of kerosene to a person without a valid ration card.
