Hockey stick attack at NRS

Calcutta, Oct. 15: Junior doctors at NRS Hospital attacked a dead patients’ relatives with hockey sticks tonight after they were accused of negligence and were beaten up.

Six people, including Deboprasad Samaddar, a policeman posted at the hospital, were injured. Deputy commissioner of police Parthasarathi Ghosh said he was admitted to a nursing home.

Kalipada Acharya, 80, was hospitalised following a heart attack around 7.30pm.

“We were kept waiting for admission and then by the doctors. When a doctor finally came to the patient, he said we were late,” said Pradip Hazra.

The junior doctors denied any negligence on their part. They said the patient had to be given an injection in the absence of a ventilator. “He died a few minutes later. The family members assaulted three doctors who were on duty, blaming them for the death,” said S.S. Chatterjee, a junior doctor.

When the news reached the hostel, a group of doctors rushed in with hockey sticks. Chatterjee said: “We asked the police for help, but they did nothing. We beat up the patient’s relatives to save ourselves.”
