Row over hospital death

Raiganj, Oct. 11: Residents of the area held a demonstration on the Raiganj hospital premises after 20-year-old Roshna Khatoon, who had delivered a baby, fell and died there last night.

The protesters complained against “negligence” by the doctor and nurses. They met the superintendent of the hospital Swapan Kumar Pal, and also lodged a police complaint.

Pal said Roshan got admitted to the hospital on October 9. “She fell from the bed and sustained head injuries and died last night. I shall get a magisterial inquiry done.”

Roshan’s husband Habibur Rahman alleged that both the doctor and the nurses had taken little care of her. He also wanted to know how the gold ornaments were taken off from her body when the nurses were supposed to be on duty round-the-clock.

Other patients in the ward, however, claimed that Khatoon fell while going to the toilet and had complained of severe headache. The attending nurses gave her medicines. She was found dead in the morning, they said.

The district chief medical officer of health, Sudhanshu Shekhar Sahu, said he has asked for a detailed report from the hospital superintendent. “If somebody is found guilty, we shall punish him or her. I shall not also spare anyone who might have stolen the gold ornaments,” Sahu said.

T.K.Ghosh, the doctor who had treated Roshan, said she and her baby were keeping fine after a “quite successful” Caesarean operation. Inspector-in-charge of the Raiganj police station Pradip Chakraborty said an inquiry has begun.
