Stick for moral cop

Madurai, Oct. 8 (PTI): The Madurai bench of Madras High Court has pulled up the Thanjavur all-women police station’s personnel for arresting and filing a case against a couple, who were staying in a lodge, under the Immoral Traffic (prevention) Act, 1956.

Justice K. Chandru said the police did not have the authority to arrest the couple as they had committed no penal offence.

Rape rap

Aligarh (PTI): The Aligarh Muslim University on Monday approved its decision to suspend 10 girls for allegedly fabricating a rape charge against a university employee last month. They are also accused of rowdyism on the campus.

Navy leak bail

New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court on Monday granted bail to Vinod Kumar Jha, an accused in the navy war-room leak case, on the ground that no charge has been framed against him till date. Justice Pradeep Nadrajog, however, asked Jha to surrender his passport and inform the investigating officer about his residence.

35 released

Coimbatore (PTI): Thirty-five people jailed in the 1998 Coimbatore blasts case were released on Monday as they have already spent their prison term as undertrials. The charges included attempt to murder, rioting, arson and possession of explosives.

Cop verdict

New Delhi (PTI): A court here will on October 16 pronounce its verdict on the 10-year-old Connaught place shooting in which two businessmen were killed allegedly by Delhi police personnel.

Kutch quake

Ahmedabad (PTI): A mild earthquake was felt in parts of Kutch district on Monday. The quake, measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, hit at around 6.43am, the Met department said here. The tremors were felt in Bhachu town, prompting people to rush out of their homes. No damage has been reported.
