BRIEFS

Singur election

Chinsurah, Oct. 7: The Trinamul Cong- ress today wrested all six seats from the CPM in the elections to the managing committee of a school in Singur.

The Save Farmland Committee said the verdict at Hakimpur-Tulsicharan High School for boys, about 20km from the Tata Motors project site, was a reflection of the people’s disappro- val of the government’s “forcible acquisition of farmland”. Some of the parents and teachers’ representatives had voted in the election. Singur CPM zonal secretary Srikanta Chatterjee said the “cause of the defeat was being analysed”.

Flood protest

Krishnagar: Residents of flood-hit Nabadwip blocked the Nadia-Burdwan road for three hours on Sunday afternoon, demanding relief. They called off their agitation, 100km from Calcutta, after the police promised speedy relief.

Snatcher duo

Chinsurah: Jayanta Bal and Dilip Das, both in their forties, were rescued by police when they were about to be lynched by a mob for snatching a gold necklace from housewife Malabika Biswas at Kharua Bazar here in Hooghly. Police said the duo were arrested earlier in connection with several snatching and extortion cases at Kharua, 50km from Calcutta.
