BRIEFS

Pranab sermon

Behrampore: External affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee has said work on infrastructure projects cannot be started without acquiring land and that people agitating against takeover of farmland should keep that in mind.

“The land may be mono-crop or multi-crop but the essential point is that it will have to be used to build infrastructure and industry,” he said in Murshidabad, 285km from Calcutta.

More flights

Calcutta: Air India Express (AIE), the low-cost carrier of Air India, will launch domestic services from next year. The routes are being finalised, V. Thulisidas, the chairman of Air India, said at the launch of AIE’s Calcutta-Singapore flight on Saturday. The maiden Singapore flight will take off on Sunday. It will fly thrice a week.

Nandigram

Tamluk: Members of the Bhoomi Uchchhed Pratirodh Committee on Saturday demolished a dais at a Nandigram village that the CPM had built for a conference. The land-acquisition protesters alleged that armed CPM men had threatened the villagers with dire consequences if they skipped Sunday’s meet in Akhandapur, 165km from Calcutta.
