• Sri Lanka: Protection of the Rights of Elders Act, 2000: created the National Older Persons Council. It requires children to provide care for their parents and gives parents the right to claim maintenance from children. Also requires the State to give shelter to the destitute elderly without children.
• China: Law of the peoples Republic of China on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly, 1996: puts the responsibility of caring for elders on their families. Establishes a State-based old-age insurance system, increases legal protection of the elderly, and ensures speedy court procedures.
• South Africa: Older Person Act No. 13 of 1996: Ensures strict control of registered old-age facilities. Makes the abuse of elderly people a criminal offence. Creates several social and cultural community-based services for the elderly
