Calcutta: Flemenco Star scored a decisive victory over the course-favourite Right Again when the Vijay Singh-trained colt walked away with the season’s showpiece event, the 2,000m Monsoon Cup, on Sunday. Ridden by jockey Suraj Narredu, the San Francisco-Flamenco son handed a shade over two-length defeat to the 7-10 hot favourite.

Narredu was, however, at the receiving end an hour earlier. In the 1,100m No Regrets Cup when the visiting jockey failed Vijay’s piping hot favourite, Afforce. Trainer Shafiq Khan’s topweighted Zephyr won the race. Shafiq’s rank-outsider, True Beauty, had lifted the Reliable Handicap only half-an-hour earlier. Trainer Daniel David and his stable jockey, Imran Chisty, however, notched up a treble after Right Again’s loss.
