‘Manipur’ threat by Mamata

Singur, Sept. 30: Mamata Banerjee today threatened a “Manipur-style” protest if the government did not return the land “forcibly acquired” for Tata Motors here.

Manipur women had marched in the nude in 2004 to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a woman by Assam Rifles jawans. At a public meeting organised by the Save Farmland Committee blocking Durgapur Expressway, Mamata said “the mothers and daughters of Singur” will do the same.

Elephant dies

Alipurduar: An elephant calf died in Buxa Tiger Reserve (East) on Saturday. This is the third calf to die within the last eight days. While the two other calves were captives, this one was a wild one. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the calf had probably fallen into a jhora (stream) and suffered fractures in both the front legs.

Wife suicide

Jalpaiguri: Sabina Yasin (20), a housewife of Paharpur Chowpathi on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri, committed suicide by hanging at her in-laws place on Saturday night. Her parents, residing in South Dhupjhora close to Lataguri, have alleged that her husband and in-laws had provoked her. All the accused are absconding.

Solid waste

Siliguri: The system of solid waste management was introduced in Ward 18 of the town on Sunday. Mayor Bikash Ghosh and mayor-in-charge (conservancy) Mukul Sengupta were present at a programme organised in the area. So far, 22 of the 47 wards of the civic body have been brought under the scheme.
