Masters of air & winners on earth
Accustomed to racing against the wind, they emerged winners in a race with their feet firmly on the ground. B.P. Mandal and A.A.A. Frandis of Western Air Command finished first and second in the 4km run of the Air Force Cross-Country Championship held at the Digaru Air Force Station on Wednesday. V.K. Singh of WAC and Niraj of South-Western Air Command finished first and second in the 12-km run respectively while the overall championship title went to Western Air Command and Eastern Air Command.
Air Marshal P.K. Barbora, commander-in-chief of Eastern Air Command, flagged off the event.
Those selected from this meet will be part of the IAF team that will participate in the Inter-Services Cross-County Championship.
IT commitment
Under the aegis of inspector-general Assam Rifles (north), commander 5 Sector Assam Rifles gave away computers and other accessories to Zaphami, a village in Nagaland, as part of a campaign to generate IT consciousness, at a function on Saturday.
The local people appreciated the gesture, lauding the efforts being initiated by Assam Rifles in order to cement the bonds of friendship with the Naga people.
On September 18, the Assam Rifles presented computers and other accessories at Satakha village as well.
The computers have been installed in the Highlander School in Satakha to ensure that the children are adequately exposed to computers at an early stage.
The school management has assured that the computer centre will be open for students of other schools after the working hours of the school so that society as a whole is benefited.
Eye camp
In an age where an eye for an eye seems to be the norm, the Assam Rifles takes special pride in keeping an eye on healthcare.
The 4 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under headquarters of inspector-general Assam Rifles (south) organised a conjunctivitis awareness camp at Mantripukhri in Manipur’s Imphal East district to educate schoolchildren regarding the disease, which has been reported among a large number of patients in the last few weeks.
Doctors of 4 Assam Rifles have been working round the clock to control the spread of the disease.
A team of medical officers and paramedical staff examined the children and provided free medicines. Children were educated about the precautionary measures to be taken to prevent the spread of the infectious disease.
Aid for school
As part of its mission to help the needy, 21 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under HQ IGAR (south), donated essential foodgrains to the children of Mission Blind School in Heikakpokpi of Chandel district on September 20.
Assam Rifles has adopted the school, which has a very limited source of funds.
19 Assam Rifles of 10 Sector under HQ IGAR (south) also donated a sewing machine to Happy Valley village in Ukhrul district at a function on Saturday as part of its military civic action project.
