Imphal, Sept. 27: After boycotting the local
body elections, the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee,
seeking district status for the Sadar Hills, will meet tomorrow
to decide its future course of action to pressure the Okram
Ibobi Singh government in Manipur to concede to its demand.
The Sadar Hills, where a majority of the population are Kukis, is now part of Senapati district.
The general secretary of the committee, T. Misao, said three Kuki MLAs Haokholet Kipgen, Thangminlien Kipgen and Doukhomang Kipgen and former legislators would attend the meeting at the Public Ground in Kangpokpi.
Village chiefs, leaders of Kuki civil society organisations, including student bodies, will also participate in the meeting.
The committee intensified its agitation last month after a delegation met Ibobi Singh demanding upgrading of Sadar Hills to a revenue district by August 15. It has been demanding district status for the Sadar Hills for nearly 40 years.
The committee had already observed two 48-hour bandhs in the Sadar Hills last month and its volunteers disrupted polling during panchayat elections held on September 19.
The committee had objected to holding of local body elections as the Sadar Hills has already an autonomous district council for local administration.
The state government, however, maintained that areas where elections were held do not fall under the jurisdiction of the district council administration.
Misao said the next phase of agitation would be more intense.
