Reliance retail row

Bhubaneswar, Sept. 25: Reliance Industries’ retail foray ran into a fresh hurdle on Tuesday with traders forcing the shutdown of outlets in Bhubaneswar.

Traders ransacked two Reliance Fresh outlets soon after the stores were opened, prompting police to order their closure. The company postponed the scheduled opening of another store in the Orissa capital.

Court rap

New Delhi (PTI): Tour operator Cox and Kings has been asked by a consumer court to pay Rs 82,000 as compensation to two tourists for providing poor service during their Europe tour. The court said the company “was guided only by the motive to make money”.

Tusker kills 2

Dehra Dun (PTI): Two children, aged five and 13, were trampled to death when a tusker ran amok in Hardwar district on Tuesday. A third child was seriously injured when the elephant entered a Gujjar colony and attacked mud houses, a forest official said.

Fatal revelry

Jaipur (PTI): Three revellers celebrating India’s Twenty20 triumph were killed when their jeep overturned in Udaipur on Tuesday morning, police said. Five others were injured when the driver, allegedly drunk like the rest of the group, lost control of the jeep near Fatehsagar Lake.

Five drown

Ahmedabad (PTI): Five persons were feared drowned after they were trapped in a Toyota Qualis while trying to cross a river causeway flooded by rain water in Bhavnagar district on Tuesday, police said. The driver swam to safety.

Nafisa relief

New Delhi (PTI): Delhi High Court has extended the stay on proceedings against actress and social activist Nafisa Ali for allegedly buying M.F. Husain’s painting depicting Hindu goddesses in an “indecent” manner. The bench extended the stay till January 22, 2008. Shiv Sena leader Jay Bhagwan Gopal had filed the case. Nafisa has denied buying the painting.
