Blast toll on trains

B>nA number of Calcutta-bound trains were delayed following a blast on the tracks near Dhanbad on Sunday. The blast was allegedly triggered by Maoists. Eastern Railway officials said the Howrah Rajdhani Express arrived at 3pm instead of 9.55am and the Sealdah Rajdhani Express at 2pm instead of 10.15am. Among the other trains delayed were the Kalka Mail, Jodhpur Express and the Chambal Express.

Blockade

Around 200 Congress activists blocked Kona Expressway for an hour from 11am on Sunday demanding the resignation of police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee for “beating up” protesters at Park Circus on Sunday. The protesters were demanding action against those responsible for the death of Rizwanur Rahman, whose body was found by the railway tracks near Bidhannagar on Friday. A police team went to the spot and dispersed the mob.

Accused ill

Journalist Parthasarathi Sengupta, who has been charged with the murder of his mother, was admitted to Presidency jail hospital on Sunday after he complained of chest pain and abdominal trouble on Saturday.

Chest pain

Trinamul MLA Tapas Pal was admitted to a nursing home on Saturday night after he complained of chest pain. Pal’s family said his condition was stable since Sunday morning.

Electrocuted

Hari Mullick, a 65-year-old resident of New Town, Rajarhat, was electrocuted after he accidentally touched a wire on Sunday morning. Police said Mullick, a security guard, was returning home from work. An official of the State Electricity Distribution Company Limited said Mullick could not spot the wire which was lying on the road as the area was waterlogged. He was taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Plaza fire

A fire broke out at Metro Plaza shopping complex, on Ho Chi Minh Sarani, on Sunday morning. Firemen rushed to the spot and doused the blaze. No one was injured.
