NTPC threats
Calcutta, Sept. 8: Indrani Bhattacharya, the widow of a National Thermal Power Corporation employee, today said she has been receiving threat calls since a Delhi consumer court last month awarded her Rs 5 lakh as compensation for alleged negligence.
C. Bhattacharya, who was posted in Farakka, had severe chest pain in January 1995 and was taken to a medical officer. Although an ECG showed a cardiac problem, the doctor prescribed him only antacids, the court said. Bhattacharya had chest pain again in December that year and died.
Boy tortured
New Delhi (PTI): An eight-year-old student of a private school in Bharuch district was tortured by school authorities for a minor fault, his parents have alleged. The school has dismissed the allegation.
Murder arrest
Calcutta: Police have caught Sanjay Banerjee, alleged prime accused in the murder of city lawyer Shyama Prasad Roy. The 54-year-old was found murdered inside his home on August 16. The police said Sanjay planned Roys murder to steal his diamond ring.
Hair snip
Krishnagar: A teacher cut off a Vaishnav students tiki (tuft of hair) for failing to answer a question in class. Kailash Sardar, a Class IX student in Nadia, failed to answer when geography teacher Saikat Guchhait asked him the definition of soil.
10-lakh rap
New Delhi (PTI): The family of a 37-year-old air force cook who was mowed down by a sepoys jeep eight years ago will receive over Rs 10 lakh as compensation. The motor accident claims tribunal held Sepoy Maheshwari Ram, who was found driving the jeep in a rash manner, and the Union of India jointly liable and asked them to pay the amount, with a 7 per cent interest, within a month.
Cop probe
Calcutta: Police have begun an inquiry into the death of a traffic constable who was found dead on DL Khan Road. Bomkyesh Giri was found lying beside his bicycle in a pool of blood.
