Imphal East make a mark

Imphal, Sept. 4: Imphal West outplayed Jiribam 2-1 in the under-14 boys’ football final of the state-level Inter-School Games at Khuman Lampak main stadium here today, to claim the champions trophy.

In the under-17 boys’ event, Chandel beat Bishnupur to the crown by a 2-1 margin.

Imphal East girls swept the under-19 and under-17 events, while Thoubal emerged runners-up in both groups.

Imphal East became team champions in the boxing ring, trailed by Bishnupur. In aquatics, it was Imphal East on top again, followed by Thoubal.

The fencing crown, too, went to Imphal East, while Imphal West got the runners-up trophy. In wrestling, it was Thoubal that won the champions trophy, while Bishnupur finished second.

At the prize distribution ceremony today, director of youth affairs and sports Boby Waikhom said the 32 vacant seats in the National Sports Academy would be filled up with players from Manipur as those from outside had not come forward to enrol themselves in the institution. The academy opened here on July 24.

Waikhom said 21 students from the state and seven outstation players are training at the academy, which was supposed to have 60 students in the pre-stages.

He also announced that every district of the state would have a sports complex with imported equipment in the next three years.
