Stage set for close endgame

Guwahati, Sept. 2: Imtiaz Islam Bora and Girish Akhil were joint leaders in the under-15 category after four rounds of the 31st All-Assam Chess Championship, under way at the Kamrup (Rural) Chess Association’s office in Amingaon.

Bora and Akhil have four points each. Rajat Rajkhowa, Parikshit Upadhyaya, Raktim Kalita, Bikramjit Dhar and Pranjal Deka are in second place with 3.5 points each.

In the under-19 boys’ event, Troilukya Nanda, Nandan Buragohain and Narayan Dey are in the fray with 3.5 points each. Subhajit Dhar, Suraj Buragohain, Kushal Bagadia and Biswanath Pratap Shah are in second position with three points each.

Mahasweta Kumar is leading the under-19 girls’ event tally with 3.5 points. Sanghamitra Handique is trailing Kumar with three points. Prabin Handique and Pramod Gohain are jointly leading the veteran men’s tally with 2.5 points each after three rounds. The meet, which got under way on Friday, will end tomorrow.

One of Assam’s best chess players, Laishram Imocha, left for Chennai today to participate in the 46th national A Championship from September 4 to 16.

As many as 48 players, including 12 Grandmasters and 24 International Masters, will participate in the tournament.

The top six from the tournament will represent the country in various international events, including the World Chess Olympiad in Germany next year.

Imocha is the only player from the Northeast to qualify for the nation’s topmost tournament.
