UP polio cases

Muzaffarnagar, Sept. 1 (PTI): Two cases of polio have been reported in this Uttar Pradesh district, taking the total count to 14 this year. The cases were reported from Baghra and Kairani, chief medical officer Dr Pradip Jain said.

polio cases have also been reported in the western districts with five in Meerut and one each in Baghpat and Saharanpur.

Teacher sack

New Delhi (PTI): The Delhi government has sacked Uma Khurana, the teacher accused of forcing schoolgirls into prostitution. “Within two days of having launched an inquiry into the matter, we have decided to terminate her services,” education minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said.

Sikh insult

Washington (PTI): A Sikh man has sued a Texas judge who allegedly ordered him out of a courtroom for refusing to remove his turban. Amardeep Singh was defending himself in a traffic violation case. Singh charged judge Albert Cercone with religious discrimination and said he was “deeply humiliated”.

Cops injured

Allahabad (PTI): Curfew was imposed here on Saturday after a mob protesting against the alleged desecration of a holy book pelted stones at a police station. More than a dozen policemen were injured. On Friday night a holy book was allegedly found desecrated inside a place of worship in the Kareli police station area.

Shashi films

Muscat (PTI): A week-long film festival showcasing the movies of Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor began here on Saturday. Kapoor will interact with the audience and share anecdotes and memories of his films during the festival.

Dalit torture

Patna (PTI): A retired railway employee and his relatives poured dal on a Dalit woman and her infant daughter on Saturday. They also beat up several Dalits for allowing their children to play in the premises of a temple. Ramavtar Yadav has been arrested.
