Hosts start with a bang

Imphal, Aug. 29: Hosts Manipur put up a good show bagging 20 medals, including 10 gold, seven silver and four bronze, in the 1st North East Junior Athletics Championship 2007, which began at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium today.

Assam followed with three gold, three silver and one bronze, while Tripura was third with one gold and two silver. Mizoram has so far bagged one silver and three bronze, Meghalaya has one silver and two bronze while Nagaland has secured one silver and a bronze medal. Arunachal Pradesh is yet to open their account.

Manipur started the day with a bang as K. Rabichandra grabbed the gold in the 10,000m walk for boys clocking 51:24.26 while compatriot N. Binoy Meitei bagged the silver with a timing of 55:43.70.

In the girls’ triple jump, Manipur’s I. Roma Devi clinched the gold while Dipshikha Talukdar of Assam bagged the silver and Ashma Banu of Manipur got the bronze.

K. Aruna Devi of Manipur got the gold in the discus throw, Beauti Deori of Assam bagged the silver and Vithonu of Nagaland clinched the bronze. In the 10,000m boys’ run, S. Sanajaoba of Manipur got the gold while N. Raju Singh of Manipur came second and K. Lalawpuia of Mizoram came third.

Assam’s Anuj Bora fought strongly to wrest the gold in the triple jump while Y. Amandeep and S. Somorjit of Manipur got the silver and bronze respectively. In the discus throw, Okram Suresh of Manipur bagged the gold while Mizoram’s David Lalkhawiha and K. Lalhmangaihzuala came second and third.

In the girls’ 5,000m run, Manipur’s Kh. Rameshori Devi and K. Ibemcha Devi took the gold and silver while Zodinsangi of Mizoram fetched the bronze.

Manipur made a clean sweep in the hammer throw event as L. Gopa Singh and Md Azad Khan in the boys group while M. Chitra Devi and N. Sandhyarani Devi in the girls clinched the top two positions respectively.

However, the Assam team got a boost in the high jump event as Sahidul Islam (boys) and Dipshika Talukdar (girls) clinched the gold.

Javelin: M. Sanata Singh (Manip-ur) gold, Rahul Panging (Assam) silver and S. Sanajaoba (Manipur) third. Shot put: Tutan Malakar (Tripura) gold, Banistar Syiem (Meghalaya) silver and W. Rakesh (Manipur) bronze. Long jump: Ashma Banu (Manipur) gold, Zhovinu (Nagaland) silver and Alberina Marak (Meghalaya) bronze.
