NATION BRIEFS

Suicide at IISc

Bangalore, Aug. 27: An IISc student hanged himself in his hostel room this morning, apparently because of depression. His father was keen that he quit the institute and work to pay for his brothers’ education.

V. Ajay Srichandra from Hyderabad was a second-year student in an integrated PhD programme in biology.

A suicide note in the room said: “I am sorry Dad, the world is not for me. I cannot live, it is too much for me to take.”

New Delhi (PTI): Telecom regulator Trai has issued a notice asking consumers to register with the national do-not-call registry if they want to put a stop to unsolicited telemarketing calls. Users can register with telecom operators through customer care, Internet or by sending an SMS.

House cave-in

Mumbai: A four-storey building in south Mumbai collapsed on Monday, killing three persons. The Good Hope building — the fifth to fall in two months — in Dongri housed a madarsa. But children had not arrived yet as it was still early. The three killed were teenagers working in zari units in the building.

Rail ATM plan

Vellore: The railway ministry is thinking of introducing ATMs on trains, minister of state for railways R. Velu said. To have the facility on board, a separate bogie with adequate security is needed, he added.

Bengal maid

New Delhi (PTI): A domestic help of a senior Planning Commission official allegedly committed suicide at her employer’s home in south Delhi on Monday, police said. Pabosi, a 13-year-old from Bengal, was found hanging at the residence of Sutapa Mazumdar, deputy secretary in the Planning Commission.

Ghee arrests

Muzaffarnagar (PTI): Four persons were arrested for making ghee from animal fat. Police also seized cow meat and one quintal ghee from the accused in Sindhawli village, deputy superintendent of police Avinash Mishra said. Eight others escaped.
