Guwahati, Aug. 24: Several new faces are likely to figure in the Assam Olympic Association’s executive council, scheduled to be reconstituted in the much awaited annual general meeting at the Sarusajai Sports Complex here tomorrow.
Elections to the posts have been virtually ruled out. Among those drawing up the list of new office-bearers expected to be elected uncontested in tomorrow’s AGM, sources said at least two ministers — Himanta Biswa Sarma and Gautam Roy — will make the cut as vice-presidents along with two senior sports organisers from central Assam districts.
Another source added that the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts wanted one of their political bigwigs to be a vice-president. Of a total of nine posts of vice-presidents, two are lying vacant.
Prominent among those set to retain their posts as vice-presidents are Sontosh Mohan Dev, Bhubaneswar Kalita, An-jan Dutta and Gautam Bora, said a senior AOA insider.
As far as joint secretaries and assistant secretaries are concerned, the AOA source said creation of additional posts to accommodate more people has been mooted. The proposal was placed keeping in view a promise made by chief minister and AOA president Tarun Gogoi at Wednesday’s meeting with the aspirants for different posts.
Affiliations galore
The AOA this evening also accorded affiliation to two state sports associations and three district sports associations on the eve of its AGM tomorrow.
Those who have been awarded affiliation will be able to send their representatives to attend the AGM tomorrow, provided the affiliation committee’s recommendations are ratified in tomorrow’s executive council meeting.
These include the Assam Lawn Bowling Association, Assam Rugby Association, Nalbari Sports Association, Udalguri Sports Association and the Bongaigaon District Sports Association.
Others who applied for affiliation included the United Karate-do Association, Assam, the Assam Muay Thai Association, the Assam Kickboxing Association and the Baksa Sports Association. “The cases of those associations, which could not be granted affiliation today owing to various constraints, will be considered later on,” said the affiliation panel’s convenor and AOA general secretary Mukut Medhi.
The meeting of a panel floated by the AOA to award affiliations to as many as five state associations and four district sports associations was earlier scheduled for August 18. It was deferred till today since panel chairman Bhubaneswar Kalita was on a tour abroad.
The panel ruled out affiliation to subdivisional sports associations from Bajali and North Kamrup. There was no provision in the AOA constitution for affiliation to subdivisional associations, Medhi said.
