Archery body elects president

Guwahati, Aug. 19: The Arc-hery Association of Assam yesterday elected Assam Youth Congress chief Rekibuddin Ahmed as its working president and GMC councillor Jayanta Boro as the president.

Ahmed replaced former sports minister and Assam Olympic Association vice-president Robin Bordoloi who resigned from the association on Friday citing irregularities in the functioning of the association. The elections were held at Amgaon High School in Langhin of Karbi Anglong district.

Sources said the Bodoland sports bodies were demanding that one of the three cabinet ministers from the BTC be elected the president.

“A majority of our members opted to go for a non-minister as our president because of the ongoing controversies over ministers administrating sports without having proper knowledge of the sport they administrate,” said Ashok Basumatary, who was re-elected secretary of the association for the second term.

He, however, said the ministers could be accommodated as patrons.

Outgoing president N.N. Barkakati opted out of the elections citing personal reasons.

Amit Roy has been elected treasurer in place of Pradip Hazarika, who has been elected vice-president of the association. Shiladitya Deb has been elected senior vice-president and Simson Mushahary, Tukheswar Gogoi and Haren Daimari as vice-presidents. Shyamanta Sarma, Jayanta Boro, Pulin Saha, Bhumidhar Barman and Dhruba Adhikary have been elected joint secretaries.
