Close shave for Udalguri

Nagaon, July 27: Udalguri edged out Naharkotia 4-3 via sudden death in a first round match of the 6th under-19 girls’ inter-district football championship at Karbi Anglong Sports Association Ground in Diphu today.

The match was a goalless draw till the end of the first half. Naharkotia striker Jyoti Orang and Merry Konwar and midfielder Rekha Barla made three attempts in the 12th, 18th and 23rd minutes of the match.

However, Udalguri goalkeeper Henna Doimari foiled all the attempts very skilfully. Just before the end of the first half, a confirmed goal of Merry missed the net as the referee caught one of their players offside.

Naharkotia goalkeeper Rita Orang made a beautiful save of a sure shot goal by Udalguri striker Milu Musahari.

In the second half, striker Jyoti Orang gave a beautiful pass to Merry.

A beautiful corner shot of Merry brought the first goal for Nahorkotia in the 47th minute of the match.

Milu Musahari captured the ball from rival team right-out Puja Murmur and passed it to striker Sudhashree Doimari, who, overcoming three defenders of the rival team, scored the equaliser in the 51st minute.

In tiebreakers, the goals for for Udalguri team were scored by Amikha Khaklari and Sudhashree Doimari, while for Naharkotia, Sumi Lahon and Karsina Kumari scored the goals.

In sudden death, Lucy Marak scored the winning goal for Udalguri.

Despite a mild drizzle throughout the match more than 2,000 football lovers turned up at the venue to enjoy the match.

Rangia blanked Hailakandi 7-0 in a first round match on Thursday. Hosts Karbi Anglong defeated Titabor 6-0 in the inaugural match on Wednesday.

The Silchar girls clash with Chirang tomorrow.
