Arrested on cheat charge

Partha Roy was arrested at his residence on Prince Ghulam Mohammad Shah Road, in Jadavpur, on Friday, for allegedly cheating Bithika Biswas of Rs 75,000 by promising her a job in Australia. Police said Biswas gave him the money in 2004 and since then, Roy had been avoiding her. On Thursday, she lodged a complaint with Jadavpur police station.

Fall from roof

Sambhu Dutta, 78, died after he fell from the roof of his house at Regent Colony, in Jadavpur, on Friday noon. Police said Dutta was talking to a neighbour when he slipped. He was taken to MR Bangur Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Ganja haul

Six persons were arrested in Barasat, on the northern fringes of the city, on Friday, after 1,500 kg of ganja was found in their possession. Police said the arrests were made when the culprits were trying to smuggle out the consignment to Bangladesh. They are looking for the gang leader, who is absconding.

Man drowns

Sunil Swarnakar, 50, drowned in the Hooghly at Budge Budge, on the southern fringes of the city, on Friday. Police said Swarnakar was bathing when a strong current swept him away. He was an employee of a jute mill.

Train services

Suburban train services on Eastern Railway’s Main section will be affected on Saturday night and Sunday morning due to maintenance work at Diamond Crossing, at Dum Dum Junction station. Railway officials said 22 local trains to and from Sealdah will be cancelled as power will be switched off.
