Two persons were killed and six injured in two accidents on Wednesday morning.
Fifty-year-old Mohammad Munna, the help of a Tata 407 driver, died after the vehicle overturned on EM Bypass in Topsia.
Police said the mishap occurred around 6am, when the driver lost control of the vehicle after slamming the brakes to save a six-year-old boy.
“The boy, who was crossing the road, had a close shave. But the vehicle, which was being driven at high speed, skidded off the road and overturned,” said an officer of Topsia police station.
“Munna was critically injured and rushed to National Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead.” the officer added. The driver and three others in the vehicle were admitted to the same hospital.
Local residents alleged the police arrived on the spot an hour after the accident. They put up a blockade for over an hour to protest the “inaction”.
The blockade was lifted after a large contingent from Topsia police station arrived on the spot at 7.10pm.
In the other mishap, the driver of a Tata 407, Mohammad Tafel, was killed on the spot after his vehicle collided with a truck on Strand Road.
The help of the Tata 407 driver and the truck driver were critically injured and had to be admitted to SSKM Hospital.
The police said the accident occurred around 5.30am. Both vehicles were moving at high speed.
“Such was the impact of the accident that the Tata 407 was smashed. The mishap occurred because of rash driving. Both the vehicles were towed to North Port police station,” said an officer.
