Alipurduar, July 19: The Falakata panchayat samiti has bagged an award for its performance in the last financial year.
Given by the Bengal panchayat and rural development department, the prize comprises a trophy and Rs 2.5 lakh. It was jointly received by the sabhapati of the samiti, Lili Chakraborty, and the block development officer, Samiran Mondal from Jalpaiguri district magistrate R. Ranjit at his office yesterday. This is the first time that the department is conferring this award.
There are 110 shishu shiksha kendras and 11 Madhyamik shiksha kendras in the panchayat samiti area. Of the 12 gram panchayats, 10 have been provided with computers. The Mairadanga and Jateswar-II gram panchayats have completed their sanitation programmes and the pradhans of the two villages have been given the President’s Award for the achievement. Moreover, though the area is malaria-prone, constant awareness drives by health workers ensured that not a single person died of the disease in the last one year.
Besides the government grant, the Jalpaiguri Zilla Parishad has handed over another Rs 2.5 lakh for development work.
“We are very happy to receive the award. We have done a lot, but still have a long way to go. All credit goes to the staff. We plan to spend Rs 2.5 lakh to acquire benches, chairs and tables in all the 19 high schools within our area while the rest will be spent for the development of the villages,” said Chakraborty, the sabhapati of the samiti.
