KSU threat fails to deter govt

Shillong, June 18: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has threatened to intensify its agitation in protest against the arrest of five of its members on Tuesday last. But the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government has toughened its stand against the students’ body.

Of the five members who were arrested for “disrupting law and order” during the KSU sponsored 36-hour bandh from 5 am on June 11, organising secretary of the union Daniel Khyriem and Phyrnai Kharkongor will be sent to Silchar jail. The other three — Antonio Warjri, Ferdinand Wahlang and Pyndaplang Lyngdoh — are likely to be sent to Tura district jail.

All five have been booked under the Meghalaya Preventive Detention Act. The minimum punishment is a three-year term. The administration has clamped Section 144 CrPC. The KSU has called a road blockade from 7 pm to 5 am from June 19 to June 24.
