KSU bandh ends, 700 at ‘hearing’

Shillong, June 12: The 36-hour bandh sponsored by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) ended uneventfully at 5 pm today, with only some minor incidents of stone-pelting.

The bandh was called against a public hearing on uranium mining. The “hearing” was successfully held at Nongbah Jynrin in Mawthabah in West Khasi Hills district, 130 km from Shillong, with nearly 700 people attending it.

The bandh had a partial impact on that district, with more than 60 per cent attendance in government offices. Shops, business establishments, banks and educational institutions remained closed.

The public hearing was held amid tight security, with many people carrying black flags.
