Jesus and Mary College (JMC), located in the leafy Chanakyapuri area of south Delhi, is one of the better known colleges of Delhi University (DU). The college, now nearly 40 years old, was established by the Sisters of Jesus and Mary Congregation.
JMC offers 15 courses in liberal arts and commerce, including popular ones in sociology, history and philosophy. Mathematics is also a sought-after subject, along with economics, psychology, English and commerce. It also offers a BA pass course and a four-year course in elementary education.
The college follows standard DU admission procedures with Plus Two board results or qualifying equivalents being the major criteria for selection. This may be followed by an interview for certain courses. Some subjects, such as English, have an entrance exam to test the comprehensive and writing skills of the candidates. Annual fees range between Rs 1,500 and Rs 3,000.
JMC has a healthy multicultural environment. The lack of a hostel does not deter students from outside Delhi from seeking admission, as paying guest accommodation is available in the Satya Niketan area. The college attracts many international students, primarily from Sri Lanka.
From strength to strength
The unique selling point of JMC, students tend to believe, is the excellence of its faculty. “Our college has a dedicated faculty, and the teaching is very good,” says Gehena, a second year English student. It also has an active placement cell that brings reputed companies to conduct campus interviews.
The picturesque college campus has sprawling lawns and pathways dotted with flowers. Large airy classrooms provide an apt learning environment.
The library boasts of a number of magazines, journals and newspapers. JMCites are very proud of their elegant, newly-built auditorium. The college has a vibrant cultural life, with various societies for debating (in Hindi or English), dramatics, culture, western music, fine arts and quizzing. It is one of the few colleges under DU to have a film appreciation society. The college magazine brought out by the students every year is called Cauldron.
The National Service Scheme (NSS) has an active wing in the college. Students also point out that social responsibility is taken seriously by the college authorities.
Sports is another area that the college excels in. Students are encouraged to play badminton, lawn tennis, basketball and to join athletics. JMC’s volleyball team is one of the best in DU and has won a number of tournaments.
Fun and fitness
Apart from Kirori Mal College, JMC is the only college under Delhi University to have the franchise of a professionally-run gym for the benefit of students and faculty members. “We provide personal training to everybody. And that includes custom-made schedules of exercise and instruction,” says the head of the gym. The gym is equipped with exercise cycles, treadmills and trampolines.
The college canteen, which includes a Nescafe counter and a snack bar, offers delectable food at low prices. JMC is famous for its mouth-watering bhelpuri, and is probably the only college which can boast of an in-house chaat thela. The canteen offers light meals such as macaroni and sandwiches, chicken kathi rolls and aloo parathas.
JMC’s central location ensures that students get to frequent a lot of places. “Café Coffee Day, Nirula’s and Subway are places where we hang out,” says a student. “PVR Priya is only 25 minutes away. One of Delhi’s landmark theatres, Chanakya, is also nearby. So one can catch a good number of films,” she says.
However, JMC is not all about fun and games. Teachers are strict about attendance and academics. Students often complain that the college rules resemble those of a convent school. However, they admit that JMC has a holistic approach towards education.

Former Miss India and Bollywood actor Neha Dhupia recalls her college days
I am Proud to be an old student of Jesus and Mary College, New Delhi. I graduated in history and have distinct memories of the day I joined the college. I was prepared to be ragged, but to my surprise, my seniors became my best friends.
A part of college life was the rivalry between students of our college and girls of the neighbouring Maitreyee College. I fondly remember the college canteen and the nearby Chinese food van.
My college taught me how and where to do what. In short, it fine-tuned me.
