Blackout regret

Calcutta, June 5: The State Electricity Distri-bution Company has expressed “regret” for yesterday’s power failure in Salt Lake.

“We are aware of the sufferings of our consumers without electricity for prolonged hours, particularly in summer,” the company said. Pow-er supply had collapsed in AA, AB, AC, AD and parts of BC blocks around 2.55 pm following an underground cable fault. The supply was restored at 12.30 am on Tuesday.

In Kasba, residents blocked the Rash Behari connector for over an hour from 11 tonight protesting against prolonged power cuts. The residents also allegedly attacked vehicles.

City bus crash

Calcutta: A passenger was killed when two buses collided at Nitisha on the southern fringes of the city on Tuesday night. The dead was identified as Sumit Chatterjee, 22. Three injured passengers have been admitted to CMRI Hospital. The drivers and conductors of both buses fled after the accident.

Hilsa raid

Calcutta: The fisheries department will conduct checks at the city’s three wholesale fish markets to ensure that hilsa weighing below 500 grams is not sold. Minister Kiranmoy Nanda said licences would be cancelled if the markets were caught violating the ban.
