India set to top meet

Imphal, June 3: Indian karatekas looked poised to claim the overall team championship title, winning the most medals at the South Asian Karate Do Championship under way at Khuman Lampak Indoor Stadium.

Karatekas from the host nation have so far bagged 24 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze medals. Nepal won two gold and six silver medals, while Bhutan have a couple of silver in the kitty so far.

The tournament had its hiccups, from delayed fights to differences in awarding points.

In the team Kumite round, senior boys Ch. Nippon Singh, S. Bidyashor and M. Birjit fetched gold for India, while the host team comprising Debia Yakap, A. Romabati, L. Hememani and Nasreen Tabassum topped the senior girls’ event.

In team Kata for junior boys, the gold for India came through Rabichandra, Bikramjit and Dhamendra while the Nepal team of Bikash, Prabhu Sardar and Sukhra Raj Sana clinched silver.

Brothers win Cup

Manipur Brothers Sporting Union lifted the 1st Inter-District Futsal Cup defeating Sena Athletics Organisation, Kakching, 7-3, at Manipur University ground yesterday.

For the victorious Manipur Brothers team, Surchand scored thrice, while Boipu netted two goals and David and Dhanajit fired in one each. Rustam, Prameshor and Bikash scored for Sena.

With the win, Manipur Brothers pocketed Rs 5,000 along with the trophy, while the Sena team walked away richer by Rs 3,000. Friendship Sporting Club, Kakching, was awarded the Fair Play Prize, along with a cash prize of Rs 1,000.
