BCCI nod for new venue

Jamshedpur, May 18: Added facilities can make the College grounds a new venue for hosting Ranji Trophy matches said Prabir Mukherjee, East Zone representative of BCCI’s grounds and pitches committee, today.

Mukherjee said: “The ground looks okay. A little improvement is needed for the outfield.” He added that he was here to inspect and suggest a separate ground as BCCI’s guidelines to state associations suggests that there should be at least two cricket playing venues in a city.

He said complaints from match referees, umpires and captains have been pouring in before the committee about the poor condition of grounds, outfields and wickets in the country. “So it has become essential for panel members to visit venues and suggest steps needed for improvement,” Mukherjee added.

He said he has suggested toning up the outfield, laying an extra wicket and surrounding the venue with fencing to the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA).

“I have also suggested a temporary dressing room and at least two toilets. The ground is good for organising junior board matches but added facilities, including a permanent dressing room, is a must for a Ranji venue,” Mukherjee said.

JSCA secretary Rajesh Verma said work towards constructing toilets would start in the monsoons and discussions would be held with the Jamshedpur Co-operative College and Ranchi University officials, who own the ground, on the dressing room issue.
